Nantymoel RFC narrowly lost to Maesteg Celtic RFC 27 points to 25 in their Division 2 West Central clash after coming back from a 19 - 3 deficit at half time to again pick up a losing bonus point.
With a backline that was missing six regulars from the promotion winning side of last season, Nantymoel were forced to reshuffle their backline again within five minutes of the kick off after centre Keiron Townsend was stretchered from the field with a broke leg. Townsend position was taken over by James Teale who was only drafted into the squad that morning after Mark Chapman withdrew.
These changes disrupted the Nantymoel side who went into the interval trialling 19 - 3 with only a Mike James penalty on the board.
However, the half time team talk by the Nantymoel coaches galvanised the team and the backline whose average age was under 22 started to put the Maesteg Celtic team under pressure which eventually turned into points. Tries from last years youth player Ethan Davies, winger Rhys Bevan and backrower Ben Wareham two which were converted, one by Mike James and the other by Rhys Anderson and an Anderson penalty put Nantymoel into a 19 - 25 lead.
But Nantymoel were unable to hold onto their lead going into the final minutes and a further try and penalty for Maesteg Celtic snatched what seemed an unlikely victory at half time from Nantymoel.
Next weekend - 19 September 2015 - Nantymoel RFC host Cwmavon RFC in their third league fixture of the season looking for their first win.
