Nantymoel RFC v Cwmavon RFC

Nantymoel RFC lost their third consecutive league game of the season in a display that was under par compared to their previous two losses in which they performed with a much higher intensity and determination which ultimately earned them two losing bonus points.

Onto the game and after an early penalty miss by Cwmavon, Nantymoel took the lead when player coach Jeremy Williams slotted over a penalty from distance, which some spectators (Paul Speck) thought was outside his range.

However, this lead was short lived as Cwmavon , who was playing up the slope, turned a period of sustained pressure into points with the Cwmavon scrum half jinxing his was through a few tackles to score close to the posts which was easily converted. Cwmavon then stretched their lead with a successful penalty after an infringement by the Nantymoel pack to leave the score 3 - 10.

Then just before half time Nantymoel broke from the own half and charged into the opposition 22 only for the last Cwmavon defender to illegally kill the ball and stop a certain try scoring opportunity and even though Nantymoel were awarded a penalty there was no card for the offender.

Then on the stroke of half time the ball broke onto the Nantymoel side and the ball was quickly passed along the backline to winger Mark Chapman who dived into the corner to take the score to 11 - 10 at the break.

At half time Sion Hunnam replaced John Lloyd in the back row for the home side but Nantymoel’s talisman couldn't stop the pressure being inserted by the visitors who quickly extended their lead by another 3 points after Nantymoel was penalised at the breakdown.

Nantymoel then made a change in the front row with Carl Gregory replacing Thomas Bartle but soon Nantymoel were in real trouble when the referee showed captain Graham Morgan a yellow card for an infringement at the break down. Cwmavon then made their one man advantage pay by driving over for another try which was easily converted to extend their lead to 11 - 20.

And things then got worst for Nantymoel with the referee showing Sion Hunnam a yellow card for another infringement at the breakdown which tool Nantymoel down to 13 players and effectively kill the game off as a contest.

From the resulting penalty Cwmavon opted for a scrum and after it was reset on two occasions the referee run under the posts to award Cwmavon a penalty try which was again converted.

Going into the final quarter of the match Nantymoel emptied their bench bringing on Sean Williams for Alex Gardener, Rhys Anderson for David Eades and Simon Hunt for Peter Williams and the fresh legs give the home side an advantage. With 15 players back on the field, like the end of the second half Nantymoel started to put pressure on the Cwmavon line which resulted the in the referee showing the third red card of the season to a Cwmavon player but this was too little too late from the referee for Nantymoel. Cwmavon managed to keep their line intact as Nantymoel wasted good ball in the opposition 22 to leave the final score Nantymoel 11 Cwmavon 27 with The Moel still looking for their first league win of the season.
